Unit 8
Chapter Overview
During this unit, students learn to qualitatively and quantitatively identify the relationships between reactants and products in a chemical reaction; demonstrate the ability to explain, design, and calculate stoichiometry problems (mole-mole, mole-mass, and mass-mass); identify the limiting reagent in a chemical reaction; and calculate percentage yield, all while properly using dimensional analysis and significant figures.
Main Ideas
The law of conservation of matter governs chemical reactions.
Stoichiometric calculations involve the proper use of moles, dimensional analysis, scientific notation, and significant figures.
The amount of reactants in a chemical reaction determines the amount of products.
Misconceptions
Students may think all the reactants are used up in a chemical reaction.
Students may not understand using units with measurements for dimensional analysis.
Students may not understand scientific notation.
Vocabulary
Limiting Reactant/Reagent – the reactant that is used up in a chemical reaction that determines the amount of product(s) produced
Stoichiometry – calculations using the molar relationships between the reactants and products in a balanced chemical equation
Dimensional Analysis – the process of solving stoichiometric and other types of problems by including and cancelling units for all quantities
Percent Yield – percent ratio of actual yield to the theoretical yield
